Traditional Key Cutting Won’t Work for Remote Car Keys

Have you lost car keys? Are you locked out of your car – or have you been locked out in the past? If you have a newer car model, you probably do not have the traditional ignition key. Most likely, your car starts using a chip key, also known as a “coded key” and “transponder key.” This is an advanced auto security system that came onto the market in the mid 1990’s. Your car stands a far better chance of protection against car theft. However, it also means that it will be more difficult, time-consuming, and expensive top copy new car keys.

When you first purchase your vehicle, the car dealership will usually give you one spare car key. Do not lose it! Keep it in a safe place in your home. If you get locked out, you can use the spare key to open the doors and retrieve the car key. If you do not have a spare key and you are locked out or you lost your key, you will need a transponder programmer. Why can’t you hire any locksmith to cut you a new key or change the locks on your car door? With special chip key programming, you need specialized care.

How does chip key technology work?

The term “transponder,” refers to a transmitter plus a responder. The actual transponder can be found inside the head of your key, so it is hidden from view. When the key is in close proximity to the ignition, it becomes energized. It sends a unique alfa/numeric identity code to the on-board computer in the ignition. If the code is not an exact match, the car won’t start.

What does this mean if you lose your car key?

If you don’t have your spare key handy, you will need transponder key programming. You can go to your dealership, a local car locksmith, or partially handle it on your own.  If you recently purchased your car, the cost of transponder key programming may be covered by your warranty. Before making any decision, check your car manual for the warranty information and to see if it has the transponder code.

Every car manufacturer and model is different and the cost of getting a car replacement will also vary. You can expect to pay $75-$300, which is a wide range. Generally, the car dealerships are more expensive than your local car locksmith. You can also get the transponder key blank online, but you will need to wait for shipment. Also, having the blank does not mean you will be able to program it on your own. Most likely, you will need the car dealership or car locksmith to program the key.
